ASHE BONE

Summary:

Made with Unreal Engine 5.2

The goal of this project was to make a 3D game which could be made in the time limit given to us.

This project was developed in 48 hours.

Project Goals:

  • Design the game in-keeping with a given theme.

  • Create a game within the time limit (48 hours).

  • To create a 3D experience.

  • To test my new found skills in Unreal Engine 5.

The game:

A light-hearted, low-poly, comical, but also satirical middle-life crisis, horror game. You need to keep killing, but more importantly, you need to reinvent yourself. You got plenty of great role models. Find the outfit for the job and let's get to work! As the roles have been reversed, it's time to dawn a new costume and to become spooky once again.

The Process:

I signed up to the GMTK game jam for the second time this year, the theme was "roles-reversed." After meeting my team, we spent the first portion of the jam deciding on a concept and preparing a task sheet to determine how much we could achieve in the given time. We came up with lots of ideas, including various maps and additional features, but we had to cut back a lot of it, to give ourselves a clear list of achievable goals.

I had recently completed a Udemy Unreal Engine 5 course so in addition to working on the game design, I decided to help out with the programming to challenge myself for this jam. I collaborated with the programmer and learnt a lot of new things while putting my existing skills to use. I also had key design input into the flow of the game and the mechanics, including the closet hiding feature. In addition to this, I set up the UI/UX functionality ready for art integration later. Towards the end of the project, I contributed to the QA to see if there was any bugs/ inconsistencies and fixed them when I found them.

After uploading with just 40 seconds to spare, we found out a code plugin had issues that made the build unplayable! Despite not meeting the game jam deadline, we continued work to fix the problem, rebuild and send the game around to friends and family. This process gave me a great insight into a fast paced working environment, and taught me to always test builds as well as in engine!

Closing thoughts:

My mission was to do a game jam to test my new found skills and to see if I was ready to finally go on my own. I can now safely say mission accomplished, even if we were disqualified. But that doesn't matter. With my new found confidence this is now finally the beginning of me being a Game Designer that different companies can recognised as me being one. As for the project, well it's another 3D game, so that's always positive. One that is satirical and charming. While being interesting to play. I've come a long way since my first Jam and it shows.
