CAPYBAREN VS THE CATAPOCALPYSE

Summary:

Made with Unreal Engine 4.25

This was a project to make a start on my journey, and to being working in a simulated team working environment when making games. To also become a project lead.

This project was developed in a week.

Project Goals:

  • Design the game in-keeping with a given theme.

  • Manage and direct the project.

  • To create a 2D experience.

The game:

You take the role as the courageous Capybaran, as he sets off to defeat the terrifying one-eyed Catpocalopse and his band of feline fighters. This is a traditional 2D bullethell game with pixelated graphics. As it is a bullethell game you will have to navigate through the onslaught of bullets flying at your while defeating enemies and finally tackling the boss at the end.

The Process:

I signed up to my very first game jam, which was a bullethell game jam. I felt very excited as I had no previous experience in game jams before. I met with with my team and waited patiently for the theme to be revealed. The theme was "10 seconds." I decided that as the main game mechanic for the game, every 10 seconds you would be given a buff to your character. In turn to balance this out the enemies would also be given a buff to compliment yours.

I started the game design document and after I finished it I made as much detail as I possibly could. I was also managing the project and making sure everything was running smoothly and people were doing their tasks. I had a suggestion that I should do the UI stuff as we didn't have that done. So I got to work making some UI stuff for the powerups. They weren't meant to be ppermenant but because they looked so cool, we decided to keep them!

I also play tested the game but because we were running out of time, we just had to go with what we had. We submitted the game on time and we all felt very happy with the result. Despite Unreal Engine not being design for 2D games, we made it work and we were happy with what we achieved.

Closing thoughts:

This was my first game jam so there would definitely be improvements to make. I received criticism from my peers that I took on-board. But as a first game made in a game jam this wasn't too bad. So with that being said I felt like this was a good constructive start to my journey.
