OTOSHI CASTLE

Summary:

Made with Unreal Engine 4.25

This was a project to test out what I had learned in previous game jams and to put those design skills to the test.

This project was developed in a week.

Project Goals:

  • Design the game in-keeping with a given theme.

  • Manage and direct the project.

  • To create a 3D experience.

The game:

Set in medieval Japan. You play as the samurai, blasting your way through ninjas floor by floor. In a castle that has very bad structural flooring. You must defeat 3 waves of enemies before facing the boss which turns out to be one of your own who has defected to the ninjas. To succeed you have to destroy the floor on which enemies stand, then they will fall to their doom. But be-aware, they can also do the same.

The Process:

I signed up to the Epic MegaJam with the hope to create a 3D experience. I met with my team beforehand and the theme was "running out of space." After the theme was announced we immediately got to work on brainstorming ideas, making sure to have everyone's voices heard. We decided to centre the game around the floor collapsing and build the game off from that one idea.

From there we came up with the idea that to progress through the game, you should go up floors/levels to then reach to the final boss. It was also at this point we came up with the idea of setting it in medieval Japan, with the ninjas being the enemies and the samurais being player controlled. To make sure that we took full advantage of the movement and game mechanics, we made it into a turn-based strategy game.

With no one doing the sound and music I stepped in to fill in the role. Because I don't have music equipment or software, I had to find royalty-free sounds and music on the internet! Everyone was happy with the sounds and music that was provided by me. During all this I worked very closely with the programmer. Liaising with him as to what specifics of each mechanics and how they should be implemented.

Closing thoughts:

Overall it was a very ambitious project which I felt that was executed very well. It is challenging, but it feels really awesome to play. I do feel like we should've added a tutorial to help people understand. Not everyone can get to the boss battle, but if you do it's quite a nice reward after getting through loads of enemies. It's a 3D experience that I am proud of and finally have got a 3D game under my portfolio to round things off. Definitely one of the best games I've made so far.
