KITTENSTEIN 3D

Summary:

Made with the Godot Engine

This was to get me back into the swiong of things and to see if I have learned from my past mistakes from the previous project.

This project was developed in 3 days.

Project Goals:

  • Design the game in-keeping with a given theme.

  • Assist with the Game Design, and Level Design

  • To create a 2.5D experience akin to Doom/Wolfenstein

The game:

You are a cat that is hell bent on taking over the world. But in order to do that you must first trash your owners house and then leave when you are done.

The Process:

I signed up to the MiniJam#80 to have a go at doing a small little challenge with some people over a weekend. The theme was about cats and we got to work immediately on making the game. Since we were using the Godot engine, in terms of direction we had to follow the programmers guidance on what to do in the project. He was very helpful to all of us.

I did the game design document and said that we could do a 2.5D experience as a way of accommodating everyone's skillset. The artist was comfortable doing pixel art and the programmer had never really done 3D stuff before so coming to 2.5D was a good compromise. I came up with the game mechanics such as shooting furballs and swiping with the cat's arm as the main ways of attacking. The objects that you can destroy would be how you would progress in the game, and they would be everyday objects. Finally the owner would be the only enemy in the game that can damage you and be a force to be feared.

After doing the game design document I then decided to be useful and help with the level design. Actually making the map. The programmer gave me the tools and I got to work placing all the main objects in the level to make it look homely as best as I could. While also making it easily navigable to the player.

Closing thoughts:

Overall it's quite a cute small homage to what came before in a very fun way. It's different but cool. It's something that I can put on my portfolio and be somewhat different to other people, in the sense that it's a Wolfenstein/Doom inspired game. Although I gave level design a go, I feel like further improvements can be made but it wasn't too bad. Perhaps I should try level design again another time.
